You made all of them sound likely. I'm pretty sure #1 is true, so I'm flip-flopping between #2 and #3. I'm going to choose #3 as the lie, because although I know cat hierarchy is definitely a thing, I think it isn't something that would stop you. I say this after reading your wonderful stories and seeing the patience you have with your animals.
