While I do read mostly within our writing community because that's all the time I have with a nearly full time job and writing my own, I hardly consider it a read for read tactic. I enjoy reading those I choose to read and wish I had time to read more. I wouldn't worry about it, Adrian. I believe your pubs doing the right thing by supporting its writers.
