When Anxiety Drives You, Why Bother Taking Your Car?
The time I almost didn’t make it.
Day Eleven prompt: What is the most recent thing that has caused you anxiety?
The other day, I had an important appointment. Google Maps said it would take me one hour to get there, so I did the conscientious thing and gave myself two hours to be sure. After preparing my duties at work for the following day, I left the office with a huge smile. Today was a big day. I couldn’t be late.
I was stuck in multiple traffic jams as I travelled across the city. Where was everyone going? During sporadic periods, I could see pavement. It was my saving grace as I revved the gas a short distance until coming to a complete stop. I praised myself for leaving early but worried if it was early enough.
It was hard to keep my heart from racing. Anxiety had stepped in. With sweaty palms and urgent desire, I became hopeful when I reached the halfway point, only to dip into worry again when I came to a full stop. A police car screamed past me, and I sighed.
Meter by meter, my tires rolled, and things weren’t looking good. I thought of calling the shelter to notify them of my presumed lateness, but I held back. Who knew what would happen? I chose…
