On November 19th, my son-in-law will celebrate his birthday.

Surrounded by family and friends, everyone will commemorate his day and his alone. Why? Because he insists on it — in fact, he demands it.

Despite his toddler’s birthday falling two days later and his wife’s special day landing a week after his, he refuses to share. Does this make him selfish?

Hardly.

Ryan is a cherished goalie who supports his team, a company manager who extols the virtues of all employees, and is a husband and father who champions his family.

He is anything but greedy.

So, if he wants to remember his birthday at his own party to honour his existence, let him be.

Just don’t tell him he shares his birthdate and year with thousands of others because, in our family, universe, and galaxy, there is only one unique version of him — and that’s worth celebrating.
