My Home Wasn’t Like Little House on the Prairie

Day Twenty-four prompt: Have you lived in both rural and urban areas? Which do you like better?

When I was a child, I told everyone that I would own a hobby farm when I grew up. My grandfather tried to explain that buying land was expensive, but I paid him no mind. The pastures were just a stone's throw from his apartment building, which suited me fine. Little did I know that by the time I grew, developers used that land, and so, to find greenery, I needed to head much further north.

And then there was that annoying thing called a price tag. My grandfather wasn’t kidding. The land cost was out of reach, so my husband and I settled for a beautiful home in the suburbs. So, instead of owning ponies and Holsteins, we settled for a Boxer and a cat. Although we lived on a busy street, we had a nice backyard that invited squirrels, raccoons, and a variety of birds. Not exactly rural living, but it encouraged an easy-going lifestyle that differed from the feel of downtown life.

When my marriage dissolved, I went back to city living. Never enjoying the hustle and bustle that comes with it, I moved to the outskirts to get out of the mayhem. I live by a lake…
