If You Think You’re Perfect, That’s Your First Imperfection
Sorry to break the news.
Have you noticed how most people feel dissatisfied with where they are in life, even when they put in the hard work to better themselves? For many of us, life is a struggle. But where would we be without the will to push ahead? We all need goals, something to aspire to. It’s not in our nature to sit comfortably where we are for any length of time. That’s been my experience, although meditators and gurus may disagree. Sure, there are those who live in the moment finding their sense of calm, finding comfort in being, and enjoying where they are, but don’t get fooled. Even content people are striving for more — greater joy, further inspiration, or a deeper sense of meaning. Everyone hopes to advance in life; we call their destination one of perfection.
But is perfection possible? Does it exist? And the bigger question may lie in whether one’s idea of perfect is the same for everyone. I don’t believe so. And I don’t believe it exists. Perfection is the carrot dangling in front of us, and we are the horse pulling the cart, a wagon full of our troubles. If we stop moving, our problems are never far behind us. Yet still, that carrot’s always one step ahead.
