I wasn’t looking for a partner. Not a romantic one, anyway. My life was perfect. I went to work, ate, wrote fictional stories and poems, watched TV, and slept alongside my pet cat and Chihuahua. So I wondered why I should upset my equilibrium by introducing a man. All was right in the world, but I was lonely.

I wasn’t grossly overweight, but there were pounds to lose and fitness to gain, so I joined the local pole dancing club down the street from work. I’ve never enjoyed the “typical” gym-like atmosphere or its exercises, so I was up for something new. The classes intrigued me, and before I knew it, I was working out five times a week and having the time of my life. I was awkward, but nobody laughed. The women were there for their own reasons; most recreationally like me, others for professional practice.

Working out at such a studio brought me to shed my excess pounds, but the biggest gift I received was developing a great love of my sensuality. For the first time in years, I embraced my feminity. I hadn’t noticed my confidence growing within until I had a community of women to belong to, a place to hang out, and feelings of sexiness from my head to toe.
