I sent my daughter my referral link through email and when she clicked on the link, it took her to (I think it was Apple Pay) and she joined. Turns out if you sign up through Apple, the writer doesn't get credited and Medium can't reverse it and Apple won't refund. I was furious because it was Medium's link that brought her there. "My" link that is and I didn't benefit. Fortunately, Medium made things right for me when I complained but it makes me wonder how many others have tried to sign up using my link and were taken through Apple and I never got credited. I'll never know. : (
