I disagree and agree with your first response. If you give the gift, you're getting something out of it. It might be the self-assurance that you're doing the "right" thing, or it might be that you're avoiding being looked at poorly if you don't give the gift and you reap the benefit that comes with being recognized as the good guy or you're not dismissed, etc.
