Day Twenty-Eight prompt: Write a poem about your dog or cat

That day at the shelter
when you melted into my arms,
I knew you were a cuddler,
but it turned out you were a master of deception,
never allowing us to hold you again.
But that didn’t matter.
You gave your love in so many ways.

After signing the paperwork,
it took five long days before we brought you home
as staff prepared for your spaying.
Not a day went by that we didn’t visit you;
let you know you were chosen.
We instantly loved you
and promised to take care of you.
We never broke that promise
up until the day you died.

But maybe it was you who chose us.
While your beauty captured our attention,
don’t think your playful antics went unnoticed.
You did everything from batting my arm through your cage
to standing on your head
as our hearts…
