There are two choices. I can either do it or write about it because both should be on my list of to-dos. Unfortunately, there are many excuses not to do household chores, and I have found all of them. You name it: vacuuming, dusting, or de-cluttering. I hate them all. I detest cleaning so much, even the dust specks complain. But if I’m forced to choose one, cleaning the bathtub and surrounding tiles wins first prize.

Throughout my life, I’ve struggled with cleaning. My mother tried teaching me well, but despite her best attempts, I could never follow her art for maintenance. And it is an art because no matter how hard I try, the finished product is never a masterpiece. When I clean, I spend so much time with little results. Why do I find it so hard? I’m not sure, but perhaps when we clean, we must do it with love.

But I’ve lost no love between me, rags, brooms, a dustpan, mops, and sponges. And don’t get me started on cleansers. I have an extreme sensitivity to smells that grow stronger every day, making using cleaning products difficult. Even the non-scented ones still have a smell that catches my throat, albeit not a perfumed aroma.
