Day Twenty-Five: The Moment You Realised You Were/Weren’t Straight?

Leave it to Keeley to ask me when I knew I was straight. Outside that time, I stole a pack of bubble gum at the local convenience store and paid the price; I knew I wasn’t crooked. But we all know that’s not the angle Keeley Schroder was after. No, that frisky girl likes to talk about sex — hers and others. So, I’ll spill the beans. I first learned I was straight when I learned my cousin was gay.

I don’t remember the age when my cousin announced his sexual preference aloud, but long before, it was something I suspected. I must admit that my suspicions rested on stereotypes, like his being a professional male ballet dancer, because he showed no other sign. But growing up, it wasn’t anything we talked about. I was a late bloomer in the sexuality department, and as a family member, his preference didn’t matter.

But it did highlight for me that there were options, but despite enjoying living life as a tomboy, my sexual curiosity centred on boys. And I admit, I was glad. It saddened me to recognize that life for gay men was not an easy road to follow. I knew that by maintaining the status quo, life was less problematic. Still, as a…
