My scariest dream was never-ending. The movie was in slow motion, skipping from each scene to scene. The horror started as one dream that morphed into another, and for the first time, I saw myself standing outside of myself, looking in. It’s called lucid dreaming — what some might call a dream within a dream. It was also the first time I could remember having a dream so real that it sent shivers down my spine in the middle of it. Maybe it was the images, or it may have been the drugs.

I had offered to watch the family dog for a weekend after my former husband, and I separated. I’ve never been comfortable living in a house alone, much less one that wasn’t mine anymore, but Fraser was a Boxer with his protective genes intact. So there was nothing to fear, I told myself, but after I took my pills, as I lay in bed, my nerves got the better of me.

It wasn’t only the solitude and the darkness that made me uneasy but also fear over any side effects that could come from increased medication. It was heavy-duty stuff and until I adjusted to the new dosage, feeling off was to be expected. I lay my head on the pillow and was out in an instant. Suddenly, the room swirled as I stood inside my ex-husband’s…
