The greatest thing about Keeley’s 31-Day challenge is how we all have choices regarding how far-reaching we choose to go. We can share ourselves surface-deep or navigate through emotional hardship and turmoil to reach the heart of our souls. On most occasions, I prefer the latter, and although it hasn’t been easy, it’s been tremendously rewarding. But for Day seven, as I’m consumed with worry over my fur-baby’s health, I chose in-between.

So, what can I do to write an exciting story about my greatest role model when the answer lies in what many deem obvious — our mothers or fathers? After all, aren’t our parents supposed to care for us and provide the light that guides us to becoming our best selves? I used to think so and took my mother for granted until, over the years, I’ve learned not all moms are like mine. I knew I had a gem, but maturity taught me I had one that was priceless.

My mother is the epitome of selflessness. She is loyal and fierce, and there isn’t anything she wouldn’t do for her family. And the best part is that she does it without expectations. Instead, she gives of herself because that’s who she is and what she needs to survive — nurturing her generous heart is as necessary for her as breathing air.
