Day Four: The Most Awkward Situation You’ve Ever Been In

“Pull over here,” Ed said. “It’s out of the way.”

“No,” I cautioned. “We’re too out in the open. Someone might see us.”

“Who’s going to find us, Karen? It’s a long, dark road?”

That was thirteen years ago, while Ed and I were dating. It was when we thought fooling around in my car was sexy. Where we park depended on how mischievous we felt. On this night, we felt amorous, so I moved my car deeper into seclusion. That’s when clothes flew, hands groped, and mouths went places only lovers dared to go.

The car’s interior was dark, but lovers have a way of finding each other. Under the darkened sky, there was barely a star in sight.

“Karen,” Ed whispered. At first, I didn’t hear him.

“Karen, look, there are headlights.” As Ed pulled me out of my love-drunk stupor, we prepared for what was to come.

We couldn’t make out the car. The lights were blinding as they shone in through the side window. Who was it? Was it a carload of thieves coming to rob us? It wouldn’t have been that hard. Having parked off the beaten path, we were…
