Day Eleven: What’s a Soppy Cliche You Love but Shouldn’t?
All’s fair in love and war, so I dare you to pick only one.
Keeley, what are you doing? As writers, we strive to veer from cliches because they’re deemed a big no-no. Critics say, “Come up with our own lines and puns, don’t rely on regurgitated spewing.” And I try to stick to this advice, so when asked what my favourite soppy cliché was, I drew a blank. My mind filled with so much air that I needed to search to find “the one” that made my heart sing — the cliché of all cliches.
Let’s start with “Love is Blind.” This quote is extremely meaningful to me. Please don’t judge me. When I referred to it, I was only a child. I had an overwhelming love for dogs, and I wanted to own one. But my parents didn’t have the same yearning, so although I begged and pleaded throughout the years, my cries went unanswered.
Seeing as desperate measures called for desperate action, I began telling my mom that I wished I was blind. Why? If I lost my sight, they’d have to get me a guide dog. My love for dogs superseded my need for sight. How ridiculous was that?
