Car Talk Makes a Good Lullaby

Writing Prompt: non-social social events

To eavesdrop on your
parents’ conversations
or avoid car sickness,
lay your head in the back seat
in the family car,
and pretend you’re asleep.

Not before long,
soft voices mixed
with the gentle rocking
of engine meeting gravel,
will lull you, an innocent
bystander, into a
welcomed state of calm.

They speak; you listen.

And as your minds intertwine,
in this non-social social event,
you become bound
to one another
in ways none of you
completely understand.
