Adopting a Kitten Isn’t All It’s Cracked Up to Be

It’s not all giggles and fun.

Huey has friends in high places. — Author’s Photo.

Huey’s adorable. Most of the time, he’s curious and sweet. He’ll cuddle in our arms for hours, play fetch, and show affection in umpteen ways. Who wouldn’t love this rascal?

Meet my husband, Ed. He loves Huey to the moon and back, but not this morning. After waking, Ed strolled to the coffeemaker and fixed his first cup of hot steaming coffee in his favourite Buffalo Bills mug. Then he carried it over to the rickety TV tray, like any typical Thursday morning — his regular day off.

I woke to a burst of excitement.

“What’s wrong?” I yelled from beneath the covers.

A straightforward question, and then Ed gave it to me with both barrels.

“He’s everywhere! That guy’s swatted all my things off the wall unit. He’s ambushed this condo with paper bags everywhere and broke my mug.”

“And,” he added. “He stole my Buffalo Bill sunglasses. I can’t find them anywhere.”

Ed wasn’t wrong. Huey had turned our unit into a war zone that said more about my lack of cleaning skills than it did about his kitten antics.

“Ed, he’s a kitten.”
