A backwards story — Part one

“Happy Anniversary,” he said. “I love you very much. I’m so happy you came into my life, Karen.”

This is the text my husband sent me. It’s so simplistic — and yet heartfelt.

I’m fortunate that while today is the actual day for celebration, he never misses a day to tell me how special I am.

Chalk it up to failed relationships, on both sides, leaving us in a place of recognition that what we share is magical.

Do we ever misunderstand each other? We do.

Do we argue? Of course — but rarely.

What makes us work is noticing the littlest beauty in each of us and what intrinsically makes us who we are.

Have we changed over the years? We have, but it’s because we’ve chosen to and not because the other expected it of us.

Now that’s true love.

I love you, honey.
